Collaborations
Oneonta-St Marys
Collaborative Partnership: For three years, Oneonta 1-6 Block students have
had the opportunity to go to St Marys PA with me as their supervisor to
complete part of their three-week participation at the St Marys Area Middle
School. Students have had the opportunity to engage in a week-long intensive
experience where they are teamed with 6th grade teachers and the building
principal (Mr. Jim Wortman) and are placed in science, math, literacy, reading
and social studies classrooms. They also have the experience of teaching in the
St Marys MS state-of-the art outdoor classroom that contains a trout nursery, a
lodge-classroom facility, technology, a wind turbine, a greenhouse, solar
panels, outdoor gardens, a model kit “green” house, and a nature trail. St
Marys MS is a public rural school that has built their outdoor environmental
center solely through donations and grants. The Oneonta Students get to see
what can happen when there is alignment between the community, students,
parents, teachers, and administration. Also, while at St Marys, our students
obtain extra-curricular experiences that include: visiting the regional Elk
Center, participating in the MS-HS inclusion panel, meeting with school tutors,
participating in a data presentation with the principal, participating in a
“job talk” presentation by the retired superintendent and visiting other
cultural sites representative of the town of St Marys. We carpooled down
together and stayed together at a local B&B where we could collaborate and
synergize to create spectacular curricular projects that were implemented during
the stay.

Tully Regional Education Program (TREP)-SUNY Oneonta Collaborative Partnership: Hoehl Foundation TREP Experimental Block 27 EDUC 260 Science Methods: This course included hands-on teaching experiences with elementary school students in a STEM-based interdisciplinary enrichment after-school program. TREP serves grades 2-6 students from Tully elementary school. Block 27 EDUC 260 2-person teams taught a grade level lesson for grades 2-4 (Tuesdays) 2 times/semester in TREP. The content covered aligned with the NYS/NGSS teaching standards across the curriculum enabling preservice teachers to get hands-on experience teaching the content that they will be required to teach. They were supervised and evaluated by both TREP director Mrs. Podsiedlik and Dr. Avery as the course instructor. Experimental class fall 2013: 4 students, block class Spring 2014 20+ students enrolled and participated.
Milford-SUNY Oneonta Collaborative Partnership: Current project. In spring 2014, science methods brought preservice teachers (PSTS) to Milford to present their learning centers to Pre K – 6th grade students, Teachers brought elementary school children to the college camp so PSTS had a performance-based final (collaboration with Kevin Stevens from Milford, Mary Podsiedlik (TREP), and Jeff Heilveil and Kevin Schermerhorn Biology. 2014 Fall: Preservice teachers will again present their STEM-based learning centers to pre-K-5th grade children, engage in the “Meet the District” field trip, participate in other field trips for clinically rich experiences (we now have a classroom on site in Milford). We (Milford CSD and SUNY Oneonta) also submitted an I3 Federal grant proposal this summer to provide funding for this initiative as well as to fund the extension of this program to four additional high-need rural school districts. Milford is the LEA on this. If funded, we (myself and Mary Podsiedlik) will provide the STEM Place-Based Teacher Professional Development (pre- and inservice) for our component entitled Valuing Elementary Engineering Education for Rural Youth (VE3RY).
